DESCRIPTION: 

This has two main objectives:

  • To build a plant site for the production of biogas
  • To convert conventional diesel buses into biogas-powered buses.

HISTORY

Approximately 80% of the 15,000 m³ of biogas produced daily by the waste water treatment plant (i.e. the equivalent of 6,000 liters of petrol every day) was used internally to supply heat and power to the plant; the rest was burnt off.

The biogas cleaning unit was commissioned in June 2005 and a distribution terminal was installed at the production site. Using the absorption method, the unit has demonstrated a capacity to produce high quality biogas fuel at the designed nominal rate.

Eighteen buses are currently operating on biogas. All of them have, given complete satisfaction to the operators/ users.

OBJECTIVES:

Utilize biogas produced by the suburban sewage plant to power urban transport buses.

RESULTS:

After the 26 months establishment period, all of the town's buses were operating off of the biogas produced by the repositioned plant. This offset the mounting fuel expense the city faced.
